Blue Water Cafe is one of those places that books up fast, not because of the reasonable prices but because of the delicious food and selection. Everything we tried that night exceeded expectations, including a healthier option of Sablefish with bok choy, quinoa and shiitake mushrooms (so flavourful!). The atmosphere was ideal for a romantic night out with the dinning room of red and gold with charming wood beams, glass blown wine decanters and wine everywhere you looked. The surprise is that this restaurant also offers top quality sushi with a sushi bar against the far wall where you can sit and watch the masters at work. Although I don’t know if they are traditional master or not but the sushi was certainly the best I’d ever had.
The glass blown wine decanters are a conversational piece that I must mention. When you order a bottle of wine, especially when it is a fuller body, you can request any decanter you’d like. We selected a decanter that had a unique twisted architecture about it. It was engineered to pour a perfect 3 ounces of wine when twisted properly.
Some decanter designs are better than others…
|The smaller decanter looks suspiciously like….never mind.|
On to our dinner!
As mentioned previously the sushi, the Stamina roll, was the best I have ever had and probably will be for a while knowing Kelowna’s sushi selection.
My sister kindly shared one of our favourite types of oysters, Kusshi.
For dinner I chose the Qualicum Bay Scallops with caramelized belgian endives, wild rice griddle cake and candied ginger with citrus sauce. Good but I wouldn’t order it again…what I would order again, besides the sushi is below.
Everything was all good, no complaints besides the fact that the pricey Kobe beef was not quite as good as what we’ve experienced before. But the reason why I am rushing through the rest of these menu items is not because they weren’t delicious but because I need to get to the piece de resistance!
The lobster in their special butter sauce. Do not choose any other sauce but the butter sauce. It is not listed on the menu but the waiter or waitress will tell you the various jus and sauces that you can have with your selection of live crustaceans from the tank. While there is no wrong choice you will not regret the butter sauce!
Overall, Blue Water Cafe is one of my new favourites. As pricey as it may be, the value beats that of the famous Joe Forte’s and their delicious selection. I will be back just for the sushi if my pockets are emptier than our previous visit. Although it would be a shame to miss out on that miraculous sauce!
